Have you heard the news, Saskatoon?
March 2023 is Canada’s National Nutrition Month, and we here at Foundation Chiropractic are wholeheartedly hopping on the nutrition express.
Dedicated to helping Canadians eat healthier and support and improve their bodies’ potential, National Nutrition Month is helmed by the Dieticians of Canada society (DC), which provides advice and campaigns for a balanced diet. This year’s theme is ‘Unlock the potential of food: find a dietician,’ but we happen to think there’s a lot we can do at home, too. Using National Nutrition Month as a springboard for mindfulness and for thinking about healthy eating is an easy way to start adding a more nutritionally-conscious mindset to your eating habits.
Making major changes to anything, especially something that’s as crucial to daily life as diet, can be overwhelming but making small changes that move you towards a larger goal is still a great thing. Even the simple shift to drinking a glass of water before meals can help you feel full faster, which in turn wards off feelings of hunger and the urge to fill up on low-nutrition snacks later in the day. Do you have any nutrition tips or tricks that help you stay mindful of your nutritional intake? We’d love to hear in the comments below!
In March, our dates and availability will be as follows:
Dr Janine will be gone March 1-6.
Dr Ali will be away on March 18.
Kim will be away March 24-28.
Foundation fun fact
Being that March is Nutrition Month, we thought we’d invite Dr Lindsey to talk a little about great nutrition, essential nutrients, and supplementation of our diet with vitamins. She writes: “I am sure you agree that it is so hard to know what to eat, what to take, even how to exercise in today’s day and age. We are constantly bombarded with advertising and opinions, promotions by the next big thing in media, or Hollywood-superstars. It can be overwhelming, so where do you start?!?” Head to our blog to read more about a few easy rules to implement and some basics on supplements and nutrition to get you started!
Chiropractors’ cooking club
With spring cleaning season well underway in March, this month we’ve picked a quick and easy instant pot meal to help clear your evening schedule. PureWow’s Instant Pot Coconut Salmon with Fresh Herbs and Lime gets its wonderful complex flavour from the coconut milk that’s used to steam-poach the salmon and the fresh hot peppers and ginger that are cooked alongside the fish. Lime juice and fish sauce help round out the flavour profile and balance the sweetness of the coconut. As Dr Lindsey reminded us in her article on supplements above, getting enough fish oil in a prairie diet can be difficult, but this recipe can help raise your weekly fish intake - the omega-3 fatty acids from fish are essential to cellular, joint, and brain health. Served alongside jasmine or coconut rice with basil and cilantro for garnish, it’s a snap to make and serves as a great 30-minute weekday meal!
Just a reminder: Suzanne’s working days changed at the beginning of 2023, and she is now in the clinic from Monday-Thursday every week, and every second Friday-Saturday. Our phone lines are open to book an appointment with any of our RMTs for the coming month!
New York Times bestsellers by Dr. Mark Hyman such as “Food-What the Heck Should I Cook,” “Food Fix,” and his latest book “Young Forever” are books that may appeal to you health conscious clientele.
